FIX: Host print sessions may stay in a spooling state when the "No Line Formatting" option is enabled and the "Characters Per Line" setting is 255 in Host Integration Server 2000 or 2004 (890947)

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Host Integration Server 2000 or 2004, host print sessions that have the No Line Formatting option enabled and a Characters Per Line setting of 255 may stay in a spooling state. After this problem occurs, the current print job does not print and you cannot send any new host print jobs to the host print session.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the host print server incorrectly resets the internal line length to 0 (zero) when the internal line length counter increments past 255 characters. When the internal line length is reset to 0, the host print server does not flush the received print data to the printer. Therefore, the print session becomes stuck in a spooling state and the print job does not print.

RESOLUTION

Host Integration Server 2000

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Host Integration Server 2000 service pack that contains this hotfix.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, change the Characters Per Line setting to a value that is less than 255.

Note This change will not affect the formatting of any print job as long as the No Line Formatting option is enabled for the host print session. The print server does not send any Carriage Return/Line Feed commands to the print job when the No Line Formatting option is enabled. Use this option to enable the printer to insert its own line wrapping commands.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
