Visual Basic .NET GDI+ applications crash when you try to run them in Virtual PC 2004 Service Pack 1 (889509)

SYMPTOMS

You try to run a Microsoft Visual Basic .NET application on a virtual machine that is running a Microsoft Windows 98 guest operating system in Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 Service Pack 1. The Visual Basic .NET application crashes, and you may receive various GDI+ error messages.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:
  • Your Visual Basic .NET application user interface uses a control from the GroupBox class of controls.
  • The Virtual Machine Additions are installed on the Virtual PC 2004 SP1 virtual machine that runs the Windows 98 guest operating system.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, you must remove the Virtual Machine Additions from the virtual machine that runs the Windows 98 guest operating system. To remove the Virtual Machine Additions, follow these steps:
  1. Start the Virtual PC 2004 virtual machine.
  2. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. Click Virtual Machine Additions, and then click Remove.
  4. Click Yes.
  5. Click Yes again to restart the virtual machine.
