SYMPTOMSYou apply a hotfix or a service pack to Microsoft Office XP
or to Microsoft Office XP Multilingual User Interface Pack on a Microsoft
Windows 2000 Multilanguage Version-based computer. After you do this, the file
version information for the hotfix or for the service pack is incorrect when
you view it. To display the correct file version information, you must
right-click the file in Microsoft Windows Explorer, and then click
Properties.CAUSEThis problem occurs because the .mui resource file contains
the file version information. When you view file properties by using Windows
Explorer, the file version information that is displayed comes from the .mui
file that is associated with a file. It does not come from the .exe file or
from the .dll file itself.
Sometimes, a version comparison check is
performed on a file and on its associated .mui resource file. When there are
two different versions, the .mui information is not displayed. Additionally,
the correct file version is displayed in the graphical user interface (GUI). By
default, version checking is enabled for Windows 2000-based files. Therefore,
when a version conflict exists between a file and its associated .mui resource
file, resources are not loaded from the .mui file.
By default, version
checking is disabled for service pack files. Therefore, the information that is
listed in the file properties comes from the .mui resource file instead. This
information is not updated in service packs except to fix problems in the
resource file itself. This information is not necessarily updated when the .exe
file or the .dll file that it is associated with is updated in the service
pack.WORKAROUNDTo work around this problem, you must use the Filever.exe
tool to determine the correct file version. The Filever.exe tool is included in
the Microsoft Windows 2000 Resource Kit. This tool examines the file header
directly to determine file version information. This tool correctly reflects
the version of the executable file that is being checked, and not the version
of its associated .mui resource file.STATUSMicrosoft
has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed
in the "Applies to" section.
