Hardware inventory data and software inventory data is not processed after you shut down a Systems Management Server 2003 management point computer (886019)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003
SYMPTOMSWhen you shut down a computer that is acting as a Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 management point, software inventory data, hardware inventory data, and file collection data that has been sent to the SMS 2003 management point for processing is not processed and may be lost.CAUSEThis problem occurs when the CCMEXEC service is shut down on the SMS 2003 management point computer while it is processing a message that was sent from an SMS 2003 client. The SMS client uses the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) to send the message. The BITS-enabled message may contain one or more of the following reports: - Software inventory
- Hardware inventory
- File collection
For example, assume that the CCMEXEC service is shut down while it is processing a BITS-enabled message that contains a large software inventory report. The report is uploaded to the SMS management point computer. When the CCMEXEC service restarts, the BITS-enabled message that was being processed is discarded. After the CCMEXEC service restarts successfully, the SMS 2003 management point computer tries to process the software inventory report that was contained in the BITS-enabled message that was discarded. When this problem occurs, the discarded message cannot be processed, and the data that is contained in the software inventory report is lost. This problem may also cause one or more of the following conditions: - A large inventory report that contains significant inventory information is lost. Some SMS inventory reports may be inaccurate.
- If the lost report contained a full delta inventory report, the next time the SMS client sends a report, the report will contain only a partial delta inventory report. The SMS client does not resend the full inventory report again. Therefore, the data you lose with a dropped message is permanent until a resynchronization request is sent to the SMS client.
-
Resynchronization requests may occur if a future report tries to update the SMS client inventory information that was contained in the lost report. Resynchronization requests may also be generated if the dropped report is a full delta inventory report.
Note This problem does not occur if the CCMEXEC service ends unexpectedly on the SMS 2003 management point computer. The code that manages the uploaded inventory file deletes the message that is being processed when the SMS 2003 management point computer is shut down. STATUS
This behavior is by design.
