You receive an error message when you transfer protected Windows Media content to a Portable Media Center device (885944)


The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Media Player 10
  • Microsoft Windows Media Format 9.5 SDK

SYMPTOMS

When you transfer a piece of Microsoft Windows Media content that has been protected by Windows Media Digital Rights Management (WMDRM) to a Portable Media Center device, the client or application may receive one of the following error messages when you try to synchronize the file:

Error message 1
800480CF - License signature failure
Error message 2
80049006 - A certificate has expired
Playback on the PC and on certain portable devices is not affected.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because a certificate that was used on one of the core Windows Media Format Software Development Kit (SDK) DLLs expired on August 31, 2004. Because the certificate has expired, you cannot transfer content.

RESOLUTION

If this problem occurs in the Windows Media Player synchronization dialog box, follow these steps:
  1. In the synchronization log, right-click the error.
  2. Click Error details.
  3. Click Web Help, and then follow the steps on the Web page to resolve the problem.
Alternatively, you can follow these steps to resolve the problem manually:
  1. Shut down all media applications, including online services such as MSN, Napster, and CinemaNow.
  2. Visit the following Microsoft Web site, and then follow the steps to update your certificate:

  3. Try to resynchronize content on your Portable Media Center device.

    Note You may have to restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

This problem only affects a limited number of clients who are using Windows Media Player 10. Affected clients may have tried to first play back Windows Media protected content between July 23, 2004 and September 2, 2004.
