User authentication may take one to two minutes when you log on to the network in Windows XP (884862)

CAUSE

This problem may occur when the following conditions are true:

Neither the wired network card nor the wireless network card uses the Authenticate as computer when computer information is available option
The DHCP client assigns an old IP address to your wireless network card before authentication has finished

Note To locate the Authenticate as computer when computer information is available option, follow these steps:

Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
Click Network and Internet Connections.
Click Network Connections.
Right-click your network connection, and then click Properties.
Click the Authenticate tab.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Windows XP service pack that contains this hotfix.
