SYMPTOMS

When you perform a complex select query in Microsoft SQL Server 2000, you may receive the following error message:
Server: Msg 1203, Level 20, State 1, Line 1
Process ID 51 attempting to unlock unowned resource UNK: 0:0:0:0.
Connection Broken
Note This problem only occurs in SQL Server 2000 build 856 or a later version.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the read committed locking optimizations are performed, and the query plan lock class in not taken in to consideration when the optimization is performed.
