You receive an "Internal Server Error" error message or a blank page when you click links on the Windows Update Web site from you Windows XP Service Pack 2-based computer (883820)



The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 (SP2)
  • Microsoft Windows Update

SYMPTOMS

When you use a Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2)-based computer to visit the Microsoft Windows Update Web site, one or both of the following scenarios may occur:
  • When you click a link on the Microsoft Windows Update Web site, you receive the following error message:
    HTTP Error 500 - Internal Server Error, Error 0x8ddd0010
  • When you click the View installation history link, or you click the Details link for a specific update, you receive a blank page, and you may be notified that a pop-up has been blocked.
To visit the Microsoft Windows Update Web site, start Microsoft Internet Explorer, and then visit the following Microsoft Web site:

CAUSE

This behavior may be caused by the pop-up blocker that is installed with Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) or by a third-party pop-up blocker.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, use one of the following methods that is appropriate for your situation.

Method 1: Configure the Windows XP SP2 pop-up blocker

If you are using the Windows XP SP2 pop-up blocker, configure the pop-up blocker to enable pop-ups from the Windows Update Web site. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start Internet Explorer.
  2. On the Tools menu, point to Pop-up Blocker, and then click Pop-up Blocker Settings.
  3. In the Address of Web site to allow box, type http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com, and then click Add.
  4. Click Close to close the Pop-up Blocker Settings dialog box.

Method 2: Configure a third-party pop-up blocker

If you are using a third-party pop-up blocker, configure the pop-up blocker program to allow pop-ups from the Windows Update Web site.
