"You need to restart" message when you install a USB device in Windows XP (883594)

SYMPTOMS

When you install a new universal serial bus (USB) device on your Microsoft Windows XP-based computer, you may receive the following message: The installation of new device is completed. You need to restart so that the changes made take effect. Do you want to restart now? You must restart your computer to use the new USB device in this scenario.

CAUSE

When you install a new USB device on your Windows XP-based computer, Windows verifies whether the device is removable or not. At the same time, Windows Explorer tries to mount the new USB device. If the device status is detected as busy when this device reorganization occurs, an "Unremovable" status is set for the device. Therefore, Windows prompts you to restart your computer.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, restart your computer when you receive this message.
