Interix 2.2 applications may not start after you apply hotfix 841872 (MS04-020) (873327)

SYMPTOMS

After you apply hotfix 841872 for Microsoft security update MS04-020, Microsoft Interix 2.2 applications may not start. The application event log contains an event that is similar to the following:
NtCreateSection failed 0xc000003a
InitPsxSessionPort CreateConsoleDataSection failed
Cannot connect to Posix SubSystem

CAUSE

Hotfix 841872 replaces the version of the Psxss.exe file for Interix 2.2 with an incompatible version.

RESOLUTION

You can use either of the following methods to resolve the problem:

Method 1

Use Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel to remove hotfix 841872. This is the recommended method.

Method 2

Copy the Psxss.exe file from the Interix 2.2 installation CD to the System32 directory. However, this method makes it appear that hotfix 841872 is still installed, and you cannot remove hotfix 841872.

You must restart your computer after both methods.

This problem occurs in both Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 and in Microsoft Windows 2000.

Windows Services for UNIX 3.0 and for UNIX 3.5 contain Interix components. However, hotfix 841872 does not overwrite the Windows Services for UNIX 3.0 files and the UNIX 3.5 files. The Windows Services for UNIX 3.0 and for UNIX 3.5 are not affected by this problem.

The problem that is described in the "Symptoms" section may also be caused by other issues. For example, some organizations lock down security by disabling the Portable Operating System Interface for UNIX (POSIX) subsystem. If you cannot run Interix 2.2 applications, and hotfix 841872 is not installed, make sure that the POSIX subsystem has not been disabled in the registry or through System Policy Editor.
