ARCserveIT 6.61 does not successfully back up files that are in the %Windir%\SoftwareDistribution folder of your Windows XP SP2-based computer (870904)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (SP2)
- Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 (SP2)
SYMPTOMSWhen you try to back up your Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2)-based computer by using ARCserveIT 6.61, the backup program from Computer Associates, files that are located in the %Windir%\SoftwareDistribution folder are not backed up. This behavior occurs even though ARCserveIT indicates that the backup was successful. Additionally, if you click the Activity Log tab in the Job Status window of ARCserveIT 6.61, you see information that is similar to the following: AE0004 Failed to open file <C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\
DataStore\DataStore.edb>.
AE0004 Failed to open file <C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\
DataStore\Logs\edb.log>.
AE0004 Failed to open file <C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\
DataStore\Logs\tmp.edb>.
AE0004 Failed to open file <C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\
EventCache\{08D2B795-AB87-4781-9B34-E5EAD4C866A4}.bin>.
AE0004 Failed to open file <C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\
EventCache\{68905883-843E-44C0-B603-BAE522C1AA23}.bin>.
AE0004 Failed to open file <C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\
EventCache\{A8A5ADAA-5C8B-4618-88BA-127E05B5DE8C}.bin>. Note This log information has been wrapped for readability. CAUSEThis behavior occurs because the Extensible Storage Engine (ESE) database that is used by the Microsoft Software Update Services (SUS) 2.0 version of the Automatic Updates service is opened exclusively by the operating system. Therefore, the backup program cannot read the %Windir%\SoftwareDistribution folder to build a backup image.
Note The %Windir%\SoftwareDistribution folder was added in Windows XP SP2.
