"ID no: c0070424" error message when you try to create the Exchange System Attendant resource on an Exchange Server 2003 cluster node (843081)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Enterprise Edition

SYMPTOMS

When you try to create the Microsoft Exchange System Attendant resource on a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based computer that is a member of a server cluster, you receive the following error message:

Facility: Win32
ID no: c0070424
Microsoft Exchange Setup
Entries that are similar to the following appear in the Exchange Server Setup Progress.log file, where Node_name is the name of the cluster node:
[15:52:05] No 'Microsoft Search Service Instance' resource in the group
[15:52:05] Creating resource 'Exchange MS Search Instance (Node_name)' of type 'Microsoft Search Service Instance'

Error code 0XC0070002 (2): The system cannot find the file specified.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when one of the resource types in the Cluster Administrator program is missing. The following Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 resource types must be available in the Resource type list:
  • Microsoft Exchange HTTP Server
  • Microsoft Exchange IMAP4 Server
  • Microsoft Exchange Information Store
  • Microsoft Exchange Message Transfer Agent
  • Microsoft Exchange POP3 Server
  • Microsoft Exchange Routing Service
  • Microsoft Exchange SMTP Server
  • Microsoft Exchange System Attendant
  • Microsoft Search Service Instance
If one of these resource types is missing, Exchange resources that were already created on the cluster node are deleted when you try to create the System Attendant resource.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, you must remove and then reinstall Exchange Server 2003 on the cluster node.

Note Before you reinstall Exchange Server, make sure that the node name was not deleted from Active Directory directory service.
