FIX: The Atl71.dll file causes a memory leak in the AtlAxWindowProc class in Visual Studio .NET 2003 (841816)

SYMPTOMS

When ActiveX controls are hosted in windows that are created by using the CAxWindow class, and then the windows are destroyed, the process of creating and of destroying the hosting window causes a handle leak. This problem occurs if none of the properties of the ActiveX controls are set.

If the process of creating and of destroying the windows is performed frequently, the process leads to handle starvation and unexpected application behavior. When ActiveX controls are hosted on the CAxWindow class, Microsoft Active Template Library (ATL) allocates a global handle that is not freed when the window is destroyed. This causes a handle leak.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.
