The name of the last font that was used appears instead of the font that you selected from the Font menu in Word X for Mac (840965)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word X for Mac

SYMPTOMS

If you select a font from the Font menu in Microsoft Word X for Mac, the font name may not appear in the Name box under Font in the Formatting Palette, or in the Font box on the Formatting toolbar. However, the font name of the last font that was used does appear.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the Word Settings (10) preference file or the Office Font Cache (10) preference file is damaged or is corrupted and the problem affects all the fonts on the Font menu.

However, this not a problem if it occurs only for those fonts that appear below the Zapf Dingbats font or below the Zapfino font in the Font list. Typically, these are fonts that contain extended characters, such as Japanese or Cyrillic fonts. This is a known problem in Word X.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, remove the damaged preference files. To do this, follow these steps.

Note If you remove your Word Settings (10) preference file, you will lose all customizations and toolbar changes that you have made in Word X. If you do not want to lose these settings, remove only the Office Font Cache (10) folder first to see if that resolves the problem. If removing the preference file does not resolve the problem, follow these steps again, and then remove both preference files.
  1. On the Go menu, click Home.
  2. Open the Library folder.
  3. Open the Preferences folder.
  4. Open the Microsoft folder.
  5. Drag to the desktop the Word Settings (10) preference file and the Office Font Cache (10) preference file.
  6. Start Word X.
