You cannot reestablish a connection through an ATM network adaptor in Windows 2000 (840670)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
SYMPTOMSWhen two Microsoft Windows 2000 Server-based computers are connected over PVCs by using ATM network adapters and an ATM switch, one of the ATM network adapters may stop transmitting. You cannot reestablish a connection from the server that stopped transmitting to the second server. However, you can establish a connection from the second server to the problem server.CAUSEThis problem occurs because the Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) cache entry for the second server expires on the problem server when the ATM network adapter is inactive for 15 minutes. Therefore, the ARP cache on the problem server does not have the media access control (MAC) address of the second server, and the problem server cannot reestablish a connection.RESOLUTIONHotfix informationA supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that this article describes.
