You cannot add a parallel port card to a virtual machine in Virtual Server 2005 or Virtual PC 2004 (840190)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to select a parallel port card in Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 or in Microsoft Virtual PC 2004, the parallel port does not appear in the list of ports.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because in Virtual Server 2005 and in Virtual PC 2004, only on-board parallel ports that use an input/output (I/O) address range of 378h to 37Fh can be attached to virtual machines. An I/O address range of 378h to 37Fh is typically used by the LPT1 port. You can configure parallel port cards to use the LPT1 port, but parallel port cards cannot use an I/O address range of 378h to 37Fh.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use an on-board parallel port that is configured to use an I/O address range of 378h to 37Fh.
