Excel 2003 may appear to endlessly loop calculating cells when you insert subtotals in an Excel 2003 workbook (839951)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Office Excel 2003
SYMPTOMSWhen you insert a subtotal in a Microsoft Office Excel 2003
workbook, Excel 2003 may appear to endlessly loop calculating cells.
Note To insert a subtotal in an Excel 2003 workgroup, on the
Data menu, click Subtotals.CAUSEThis behavior occurs because Excel 2003 cycles through the
calculation process one time for each subtotal formula that is inserted in a
workbook.
Note This behavior is a design change from earlier versions of
Microsoft Excel.WORKAROUNDTo work around this behavior, follow these steps:
- On the Tools menu, click
Options.
- On the Calculation tab, click
Manual.
- Click OK to close the
Options dialog box.
- Select the cell where you want your subtotal to
appear.
- On the Data menu, click
Subtotals.
- In the Subtotal dialog box, make the
changes that you want, and then click OK.
- After you have all the subtotals that you want inserted in
your workbook, click Options on the Tools
menu.
- On the Calculation tab, click
Automatic.
- Click OK to close the
Options dialog box.
