SYMPTOMSWhen you try to turn on journaling in Microsoft Outlook 2002, Microsoft Office XP items (programs) may not appear in the Also record files from area of the Journal Options dialog box (on the Tools menu, click Options, click Preferences, and then click Journal Options).CAUSEThis problem may occur if the path of the journal files (the Offitems.log and the Outitems.log files) is not correct or is inaccessible.RESOLUTIONWarning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk. To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods. Method 1: Re-create the Journal registry keyIf you delete the Journal registry key and then restart Outlook 2002, the Journal registry key, together with the Item Log File and Outlook Item Log File values, is re-created. To delete the Journal registry key, follow these steps: - Quit Outlook 2002.
- Click Start, and then click Run.
- In the Open box, type regedit.exe, and then click OK.
- Locate the following key in the registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Outlook\Journal - With the Journal registry key selected, click Delete on the Edit menu.
- Click Yes to confirm the deletion of the Journal registry key.
- On the File menu, click Exit.
- Restart Outlook 2002.
Method 2: Modify both the Item Log File and the Outlook Item Log File valuesYou can change the path that is in the Item Log File or the Outlook Item Log File values in the Journal registry key to a valid log file and an accessible path in the operating system structure. To do this, follow these steps: - Quit Outlook 2002.
- Click Start, and then click Run.
- In the Open box, type regedit.exe, and then click OK.
- Locate the Item Log File and Outlook Item Log File values under the following key in the registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Outlook\Journal - With one of the values selected, click Modify on the Edit menu.
- In the Value data box, type the full correct path of each log file, and then click OK.
For the Item Log File string, type a path that is similar to the following example: C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\offitems.log For the Outlook Item Log File string, type a path that is similar to the following example: C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\outitems.log
Note that username is a placeholder for the name or the alias of the user. - On the File menu, click Exit.
- Restart Outlook 2002.
