Printing files that contain Chinese fonts may create large print spool files on a Windows XP computer (839620)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional
  • Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition

SYMPTOMS

When you print a document that contains Chinese character fonts on a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer that does not have these fonts installed, the print spool may increase to tens of megabytes (MB).

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of a design limitation of font handling in Windows XP. When a font is not present in the computer, Windows XP searches for the best match among the fonts that are installed on the computer to create the font. The created font may contain a base font and several linked fonts. The file size of this created font may be in the tens of megabytes. Windows XP sends this font together with the document to be printed to the print spool.

This problem may also occur if the Windows XP-based computer has one version of the font, and the print server has a different version of the same font. Therefore, the font that is sent to the print spool increases the spool file size.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then click Printers and Faxes.
  2. Right-click the printer that you are printing to, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the Advanced tab, clear the Enable advanced printing features check box, and then click OK.
