The Microsoft Exchange Information Store service crashes when you try to move a mailbox folder in Exchange 2000 Server (839520)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

When you perform one of the following operations on a folder in a user's mailbox, the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service crashes:
  • You use the Microsoft Exchange Mailbox Merge program (Exmerge.exe) to move the mailbox.
  • You use the Mdbvue32.exe program to try to remove the folder.
  • You try to remove the folder by using Microsoft Outlook.
In this scenario, you can open the folder by using Outlook. However, you cannot view the nested subfolders that are located at the bottom of the folder hierarchy.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if a user creates many deeply-nested subfolders under a particular mailbox folder. In this scenario, when you try to move the folder or remove the folder, the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service crashes because of a stack overflow. A very large number of recursion calls occurs because of the deeply-nested subfolder hierarchy, and this exceeds the maximum stack size in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server.
