You receive a "Service Pack 1 can only be installed on Small Business Server 2000" error message when you try to install SBS 2000 SP1 (839502)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Microsoft Small Business Server (SBS) 2000 Service Pack 1 (SP1) on your SBS 2000-based computer, you may receive the following error message:
Service Pack 1 can only be installed on Small Business Server 2000

CAUSE

This issue may occur if either of the following conditions is true:
  • Your SBS 2000-based computer is already running SBS 2000 SP1.
  • You have an incorrect value in the registry.

RESOLUTION

Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. If you are already running SBS 2000 SP1 or SBS 2000 SP1a, you do not have to try to install SP1 for SBS 2000, and you do not have to complete the remaining steps. If you know that you are not already running SBS 2000 SP1 or SBS 2000 SP1a, go to step 2. If you do not know if you are already running SBS 2000 SP1 or SBS 2000 SP1a, check the version of SBS that you are running. To do this, use either of the following methods.
    • To check the version of SBS that you are running from the SBS Administrator console, follow these steps:
      1. Click Start, and then click Small Business Server Administrator Console.
      2. Under Helpful Links, click About.
      3. You receive a "Version: 2000" or a "Version: 2000 with Service Pack 1" message.
    • To check the version of SBS that you are running from Registry Editor, follow these steps:
      1. Click Start, and then click Run.
      2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
      3. Click the following registry key:

        HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\BackOffice

      4. The following list describes the three possible registry entries in this registry key:
        • SuiteVersion 2000 The installation is SBS 2000 without a service pack.
        • Service Pack "1.0" The installation is an upgrade to SBS 2000 SP1 by using the Internet download.
        • SBSRED "1" The installation is an upgrade to SBS 2000 SP1 by using the SBS CD.
  2. If you are not already running SBS 2000 SP1 or SBS 2000 SP1a, delete the SBSRED registry key. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, and then click Run.
    2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
    3. Click the following registry key:

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\BackOffice

    4. In the right pane, right-click SBSRED, and then click Delete.
    5. Click Yes to confirm that you want to delete the key.
    6. Quit Registry Editor.
  3. Install SBS 2000 SP1 or SBS 2000 SP1a.
