If you type a command line, you do not have to insert the Office 2000 CD-ROM while you upgrade to Office XP.

SYMPTOMS

When you try to upgrade your Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1 (SR1) or later installation to Office XP, you may receive the following message:The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.

Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'DATA1.MSI' in the box below.If you click OK, you receive the following error message:
Error 1706. No valid source could be found for product Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1 Premium. The Windows Installer cannot continue.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if your Office 2000 SR1 (or later) installation has a component that is set to "Run from CD". In an upgrade (or when the Setup program is started) where all the Microsoft Office programs are not being removed (such as an upgrade from Microsoft Office 2000 Premium to Microsoft Office XP Professional), Office 2000 SR-1 will prompt you for the installation source.

Method 1: If you have the Office 2000 CD-ROM

When you receive the message that is listed in the "Symptoms" section, insert the Office 2000 CD-ROM as requested, and then click OK.

Method 2: If the Office 2000 CD-ROM is not available

When you are prompted to insert the Office 2000 CD-ROM, type the following in the Use feature from box, and then click OK:

  3. Locate, and then select the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Currentversion\Uninstall

  4. With the Uninstall registry key selected, click Find on the Edit menu.
  5. In the Find what box, type Microsoft Office 2000, and then click Find Next.
  6. DisplayName will be selected in the right-side of Registry Editor.
On the left-side of Registry Editor, note the folder that is open, and then write down the folder name. For example, the folder name should be a long series of letters and numbers that is similar to the following format:

{xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx}
