FIX: You receive error messages after you upgrade to Windows Server 2003 from an earlier operating system when MDAC files are not updated correctly (839428)

SYMPTOMS

You may experience one or more of the following error messages after you upgrade to Microsoft Windows Server 2003 from an earlier operating system:

Error message 1
3709 - The connection cannot be used to perform this operation. It is either closed or invalid in this context.
Error message 2
-2147024769 Automation Error
Error message 3
8007007f Unknown Error
Error message 4
8007007f Cannot open the table
Error message 5
"Method'~' of Object '~' failed" on invoking the Open method of an ADODB.Connection
Error message 6
Error: The procedure entry point GetTextExtentPointI could not be located in the dynamic link library MSDART.DLL.
Error message 7
Error connecting to SQL-2147024769-

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the appropriate Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) files were not successfully upgraded.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, you must apply the MDAC 2.8 cumulative hotfix that is available from Microsoft Product Support Services. Typically, if you apply this hotfix after you upgrade to Windows Server 2003, this will make sure that the MDAC 2.8 files have been installed.

  • Sometimes, the MDAC 2.8 cumulative hotfix will not install at all because of problems with the current MDAC configuration on the computer. If this problem occurs, contact Microsoft Product Support Services for additional troubleshooting.
