SYMPTOMS
When a user makes a request for an Internet Server API (ISAPI) extension that is hosted on a computer that is running Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) version 6.0 or Microsoft Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2 (SP2), the extension may not load.
This problem may occur if the ISAPI extension was written in Microsoft Visual Studio .NET by using Managed Extensions for C++ and was compiled by using the
/CLR switch.
When this problem occurs, the user may receive the following error message in the client Web browser:
A dynamic link library (DLL) initialization routine failed.
CAUSE
For security reasons, IIS 6.0 or Windows XP Professional SP2 adds the following string as a prefix to all modules before IIS loads the modules:
\\?\
The Microsoft .NET Framework does not correctly interpret this new syntax. Therefore, the ISAPI extension does not load.
