You cannot mount an Exchange database that was moved by using the Windows Storage Server 2003 Feature Pack (839214)

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2003 Feature Pack to move a dismounted Microsoft Exchange Server database to a new location, you find that the database is moved successfully. However, after the move, you cannot mount the database.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if you move a dismounted database to a share that does not have the correct permissions. To perform the move operation successfully, you must use an Administrator account that has Full Control permissions for the new destination location. Additionally, the computer account on the computer that is running Microsoft Exchange Server must also have Full Control permissions for the new destination location to mount the database successfully in the new destination location.

When you move a mounted database, both the folder permissions and the share permissions are verified, and the database is remounted after it is moved to the destination location. When you move a dismounted database, the Exchange Server permissions are not verified because databases that are dismounted before the move operation are not mounted after the move operation. Therefore, a dismounted database may be moved successfully, but the database cannot not be mounted after the move if the Exchange server does not have the correct permissions for the destination share.

RESOLUTION

If a dismounted database has been moved successfully to a remote location but cannot be mounted, verify that the computer account of the Exchange server that is trying to access the database has Full Control permissions both for the destination folder and for the share.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, verify that the share permissions have been set up correctly. Also, verify that the database that you want to move is mounted before the move operation.

Note This issue applies only to databases that are moved while they are offline.

The Windows Storage Server 2003 Feature Pack verifies that the folder permissions and the share permissions at the destination location are correct before it allows Exchange databases or log files to be moved. However, if the database that is being moved is currently dismounted, the folder permissions and the share permissions are not verified.

If the folder permissions and the share permissions are not correct, the move operation will still succeed. However, you cannot mount the database after the move.
