BUG: The Visual Studio .NET smart device emulator does not load an operating system image or an operating system skin in Visual Studio .NET 2003 (839072)

SYMPTOMS

When you start the Microsoft Visual Studio .NET smart device emulator that is included in Visual Studio .NET 2003, the smart device emulator may not load an operating system image or an operating system skin.

CAUSE

You have installed Visual Studio .NET 2003 to a path that contains double-byte character set (DBCS) characters that your operating system locale does not support.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use an operating system locale that supports DBCS characters that are part of your Visual Studio .NET 2003 installation path.

Note Although you may use this workaround, the smart device emulator may not always load the operating system image or the operating system skin.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

Steps to reproduce the problem

  1. Install Visual Studio .NET 2003 to a path that contains DBCS characters.

    For example, install Visual Studio .NET 2003 to a path that contains Japanese characters.
  2. Start Visual Studio .NET 2003.
  3. On the Tools menu, click Connect to Device.

    The Connect to Device dialog box appears.
  4. Under Devices, click Pocket PC 2002 Emulator (Default), and then click Connect.

    The problem that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section may occur.
