You receive several "Cidaemon.exe - application error" error messages after you install Windows 2000 SP4 (839054)

SYMPTOMS

After you install Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4) on a computer where the Indexing Service program is installed and configured, the content indexing functionality may stop unexpectedly. When this problem occurs, you may receive one or more error messages that are similar to the following error message:
cidaemon.exe - Application Error

The instruction at "0x77fcc97c" referenced memory at "0xfffffff8". The memory could not be "read".

Click on OK to terminate the program

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the content indexing functionality tries to index certain Microsoft Office HTML files. An application error occurs in Cidaemon.exe if the HTML files contain certain MSO-style XML tags.
