You experience DFS replica set issues when you view replication schedules in the Distributed File System snap-in in Windows Server 2003 (836792)


The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Windows Server 2003, when you use File Replication Services (FRS) to replicate content between members of domain Distributed File System (DFS) volumes, and you use the Distributed File System snap-in to view replication schedules that are set on the DFS volume, you experience the following symptoms:
  • If you configure a schedule on an individual NTDS Connection object, and then you try to view the schedule in the Link Name Properties dialog box, the Distributed File System snap-in does not display the schedule for the NTDS Connection object that you selected. Instead, the Distributed File System snap-in selects an existing NTDS Connection object, and then displays the schedule for that NTDS Connection object in the Link Name Properties dialog box.
  • If you click OK in the Link Name Properties dialog box, the schedule that appears in the dialog box is applied to all NTDS Connection objects.
  • If you add a new member to an existing replica set, the NTDS Connection objects that belong to the new member do not use the schedule that you configured in the Distributed File System snap-in or the schedule that is configured for an existing connection. Instead, the NTDS Connection objects that belong to the new member use the default "always on" schedule.

CAUSE

This issue occurs if you do either one of the following:
  • Use the Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in--or use another tool or script--to configure schedules of individual connections in the DFS replica set that is in the following tree:

    CN=Volume Name,CN=DFS Volumes,CN=File Replication Service,CN=System,DC=Domain

  • In the Distributed File System snap-in, view the properties of a DFS volume, click the Replication tab, and then click Customize to change the schedule of individual connections.
The Distributed File System snap-in supports only one schedule on all NTDS Connection objects.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, do one or both of the following, depending on your situation:
  • If you use the Distributed File System snap-in to view schedules on individual connections, click Cancel if you do not want to apply the schedule that appears in the Link Name Properties dialog box to all NTDS connection objects.
  • If you must create new connections because topology changes have been made, manually modify the schedule for the new connection.
