Money for the Pocket PC is a stand-alone program that runs on Pocket PC devices. To synchronize data between Money and Money for the Pocket PC, the following conditions must exist:

  • Microsoft ActiveSync 3.5 or later must be installed on your desktop computer from the ActiveSync CD or visit the following Microsoft Web site: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/downloads/default.mspx

Note Microsoft Money 2003 requires Pocket PC 2002. Contact your device manufacturer for information about how to update your device to the latest version of mobile device operating system software, Microsoft ActiveSync 3.5.

  • The mobile device and the desktop computer must be connected and have an established partnership.
  • Microsoft Money version must be installed on the desktop computer, for example, Money 2006 with Money 2006 for the Pocket PC.

Note You can use most Microsoft Windows CE programs to synchronize data between many desktop computers and Windows CE devices. However, you can only synchronize a Money for the Pocket PC data file between a single desktop computer and a single Handheld device.

Synchronization with your desktop PC

  1. Back up your desktop Money file before synchronizing with your device.
  2. Do not disconnect or turn off your device while synchronizing with Microsoft Money.
If you disconnect or turn off your mobile device while synchronizing between Microsoft Money for the mobile device and Microsoft Money on your desktop PC, you may experience problems with the application. If this occurs, open ActiveSync Settings for Money, go to the Tools tab, and click Sync All to complete a full resynchronization of your Money file.

Synchronize first

If you own Microsoft Money and you intend to synchronize between your mobile device and your desktop PC, you should synchronize with desktop Money before entering ANY INFORMATION on your mobile device. Synchronizing first will ensure that information on your mobile device is not lost.

If you add or remove a password from your desktop file the next time you sync with your device, ActiveSync will briefly require full access to the desktop file. You will receive a message asking you to close Money, undock and redock your device, and then resync.

Selecting what is synchronized

To select the accounts that you want to synchronize, follow these steps:
  1. Start Microsoft ActiveSync on the desktop computer.
  2. Click Options.
  3. On the Sync Options tab, click to select the Microsoft Money Data check box, and then click Settings.
  4. On the Transactions and Investments tabs, click to select the accounts that you want to synchronize, and then click OK.
  5. Click OK.

Synchronization details

The following rules determine the items that are transferred to the mobile device:
  • Payees: Only Payees that are used in the transactions that you synchronize between your Money data file and Money for the Pocket PC data file are synchronized. Payees that are not used in a transaction that you synchronize are stored on the desktop computer. This functionality keeps the list of payees that is used by the data file for your Handheld device from using lots of memory. If you create a new payee in Money for the Pocket PC that you do not use in a transaction, and then you synchronize your Money data file, the payee is added to the Money data file on the desktop computer and is removed from the data file on the Handheld device.
  • Accounts: You can only create cash, checking, credit card, line of credit, and savings accounts in Money for the Pocket PC data files. These accounts are the only account types that display transactions in an account. Although you can synchronize other account types, you can only view the balances. Accounts that use a currency other than the base currency as configured in Money will not synchronize with Money for Pocket PC.
  • Synchronization conflict: When you synchronize a Money data file and a Money for the Pocket PC data file and there is a conflict with part of the data, the Money data file that is stored on the desktop computer is used to replace the conflicting data in the Money for the Pocket PC data file.
  • New Money data files: To change the Money data file that you synchronize together with the Money for the Pocket PC data file, select the new file from the "Microsoft Money synchronization settings" screen that is located in the Options dialog box in ActiveSync on your desktop computer. If you open a new Money data file on your desktop computer, the file that synchronizes together with your Money for the Pocket PC data file does not change. If you configure a different Money data file to synchronize together with a Money for the Pocket PC data file, the Money for the Pocket PC data file is replaced.
  • Transactions: You can only synchronize personal transactions between Money and Money for the Pocket PC. If you have any business transactions in your file such as invoice income deposits, in Money Small Business, you will not be able to synchronize them with Money for the Pocket PC.
