"The installation package could not be opened" error message when you try to install Visio Viewer 2002 (833507)

SYMPTOMS

When you double-click Vviewer.exe to install the Microsoft Visio Viewer 2002 on your computer after you download it from the Microsoft Office Download Center Web site, you may receive the following Microsoft Windows Installer error message:
The installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package.

CAUSE

This issue occurs if you want to install Visio Viewer 2002 to a drive other than drive C on your computer. This issue occurs if Microsoft Windows is installed to a drive other than drive C. The Vviewer.exe Setup package assumes that the Visio Viewer 2002 Setup files are extracted to drive C, even if Windows (and the Program Files folder) are installed to a drive other than drive C.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, run Visio Viewer 2002 Setup from the Vviewer.msi file. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Start Windows Explorer, and then locate the following folder, where Drive is the drive where Windows is installed:

    Drive:\Program Files\Vviewer

  2. Double-click Vviewer.msi. The Microsoft Visio Viewer 2002 Setup Wizard starts.
  3. Follow the instructions that appear on the pages of the Visio Viewer 2002 Setup Wizard to install Visio Viewer 2002 on your computer.
