You receive a "Code 28" error message when you double-click the SideWinder Gamepad USB in Device Manager on a Windows Millennium Edition (Me)-based computer or a Windows 98-based computer (832804)


The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft SideWinder Game Pad USB, when used with:
    • the operating system: Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition
    • the operating system: Microsoft Windows 98

SYMPTOMS

When you double-click the Microsoft SideWinder Game Pad USB in Device Manager on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me) or Microsoft Windows 98, you receive the following error message in the Device status box on the General tab:
The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)
Additionally, a yellow exclamation mark appears next to the device when you view it in Device Manager.

CAUSE

The "Code 28" error message that you receive in Device Manager means that the device was not completely installed.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow the solution that Device Manager recommends. If the solution does not work, use the following method.

Update the device driver

To update the driver, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, double-click System.
  3. In the System Properties dialog box, click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
  4. Expand Sound, Video and Game Controllers.
  5. Right-click Microsoft Sidewinder (Auto Detect), and then click Properties.
  6. Click the Driver tab, and then click Update Driver.
  7. In the Hardware Update Wizard dialog box, click Install from a list or specific location (Advanced), and then click Next.
  8. Click Don't Search. I will choose the driver to install, and then click Next.
  9. Click to clear the Show compatible hardware check box.
  10. In the list of manufacturers, click Microsoft.
  11. In the list of models, click Microsoft Sidewinder game pad, and then click Next.
  12. Click Finish to complete the installation.
  13. Close each of the System Properties dialog boxes.
