Modem does not work on a non-English language version of Windows XP (831717)


The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional
  • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

SYMPTOMS

After you install a modem by using Phone and Modem Options in Control Panel, you cannot use the modem to dial. This problem occurs although the modem appears to be installed correctly.

CAUSE

This problem may occur when both the following conditions are true:
  • You use a non-English language version of Microsoft Windows XP.
  • You installed your modem as one of the Standard Modem Types in Phone and Modem Options. ("Standard 56000 bps Modem" is an example of a Standard Modem Type.)

Note This problem has been reported with the Swedish version of Windows.

RESOLUTION

Service pack information

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Windows XP service pack that contains this hotfix.
