How to create links to other files in OneNote 2003 (831032)

INTRODUCTION

This article describes how to create a link to a file that is located in the My Notebook folder in Microsoft Office OneNote 2003.

OneNote 2003 does not support OLE, nor does it have a feature that lets you to insert other file types. However, you can create a link to another file type by using one of the following methods.

Method 1: Copy the file and the link

Use this method for all versions of OneNote 2003.
  1. In Microsoft Windows Explorer, open the folder that contains your file.
  2. Right-click your file, and then click Copy.
  3. In OneNote 2003, put the insertion point in your notes where you want to add the file.
  4. On the Edit menu, click Paste.
  5. In the Insert file options dialog box, click Copy the file into my notebook and insert a link to it.
Note OneNote 2003 does not create a dynamic link to your file. The file that is copied to your My Notebook folder when you create the link remains in the original folder. If you modify the original file, the copy in OneNote 2003 does not reflect the changes. If you modify the file from OneNote 2003, your original file also does not reflect the changes.

Method 2: Link to a file in its current location

Use this method in OneNote 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) or a later version.
  1. In Windows Explorer, open the folder that contains your file.
  2. Right-click your file, and then click Copy.
  3. In OneNote 2003, put the insertion point in your notes where you want to add the image.
  4. On the Edit menu, click Paste.
  5. In the Insert file options dialog box, click Insert a link to the original file.
  6. OneNote 2003 creates a link to the file that has a path name that is similar to the following:

    file://c:\Documents and Settings\username\MyFile.xls

Method 3: Insert the as a picture

Use this method in OneNote 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) or a later version.
  1. In Windows Explorer, open the folder that contains your file.
  2. Right-click your file, and then click Copy.
  3. In OneNote 2003, put the insertion point in your notes where you want to add the image.
  4. On the Edit menu, click Paste.
  5. In the Insert file options dialog box, click Insert the file as a background picture so I can add notes to it.
