Computer takes a long time to shut down after the system writes to the SD media card (830908)

SYMPTOMS

When you select either the Restart or the Shut Down option in the Shut Down Windows dialog box, the computer may take a long time to shut down (up to two minutes on a Microsoft Windows XP-based system, and up to five minutes on a Microsoft Windows 2000-based system).

Note To locate the Shut Down Windows dialog box, click Start, and then click Shut Down.

CAUSE

This problem may occur after you try to write data to a write-protected Secure Digital (SD) media card on your computer. Specifically, this problem occurs because the small form factor disk driver does not complete the I/O Request Packet (IRP) correctly when it determines that the SD media card is write-protected. During shutdown, the I/O Manager cancels all outstanding I/O Request Packets after two minutes on a Windows XP-based computer and after five minutes on a Windows 2000-based computer. Only then can the computer successfully shut down.

RESOLUTION

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2.
