Computer takes a long time to shut down after the system writes to the SD media card (830908)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows XP Professional
- Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
SYMPTOMSWhen you select either the Restart or the Shut Down option in the Shut Down Windows dialog box, the computer may take a long time to shut down (up to two minutes on a Microsoft Windows XP-based system, and up to five minutes on a Microsoft Windows 2000-based system).
Note To locate the Shut Down Windows dialog box, click Start, and then click Shut Down.CAUSE This problem may occur after you try to write data to a write-protected Secure Digital (SD) media
card on your computer. Specifically, this problem occurs because the small form factor disk driver does not complete the I/O Request
Packet (IRP) correctly when it determines that the SD media card is write-protected. During shutdown, the I/O Manager cancels all outstanding I/O Request Packets after two minutes on a Windows XP-based computer and after five minutes on a Windows 2000-based computer. Only then can the computer successfully shut down.
RESOLUTIONTo resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Windows XP. STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2.
