The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server

SYMPTOMS

When you run a program that uses remote procedure calls (RPCs), you may receive an "access denied" error message or experience similar issues. For example, when you use Microsoft Outlook to access e-mail on a Microsoft Exchange server, you may be prompted for your user name and password, even though you are already authenticated on the domain.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of a regression that was introduced in the update that is described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

824226 LSASS may cause an access violation during an LDAP search

The hotfix that is described in Knowledge Base article 824226 may cause authentication compatibility issues with other computers that are using a different version of the Msv1_0.dll file.
