Windows 2000 Server restarts after you convert a hard disk to a dynamic disk (830857)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Microsoft Windows 2000 Disk Management snap-in to convert a hard disk to a dynamic disk, you may be prompted to restart your computer after the disk conversion process is complete. When this behavior occurs, you cannot continue without restarting your computer, and you cannot cancel the process.

CAUSE

This issue may occur when one or more of the disks that you are trying to convert is mounted by Windows 2000 or by a program.

WORKAROUND

To resolve this issue, make sure that the drives that you want to convert are not mounted before you start the dynamic disk conversion process. The Disk Management snap-in displays a message that notifies you if disks are mounted before you start the dynamic disk conversion process.
