"Error Fetching URL (80004005 - Unspecified Error)" Error Message When SharePoint Portal Server Crawls a Content Source that Contains PowerPoint Presentations (830845)

SYMPTOMS

When Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2001 crawls a content source that contains Microsoft PowerPoint presentations, you may receive the following error message in the gatherer log:
Type: Document Added

Error fetching URL (80004005 - Unspecified Error)
When users search the portal, the PowerPoint presentations may not be returned in the search results.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if one or more of the PowerPoint presentations contain an embedded Microsoft Excel object. In this situation, the PowerPoint presentations may not be crawled correctly.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next SharePoint Portal Server 2001 service pack that contains this hotfix.
