You cannot use earlier versions of templates in Windows Rights Management Services (RMS) after you upgrade to RMS Server 2003 (830693)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows Rights Management Services (RMS) for Windows Server 2003
SYMPTOMSAfter you upgrade a Microsoft Windows Rights Management
Services (RMS) server, you cannot use templates that you created in the earlier
version of RMS to create Rights Management-protected content.
You may repeatedly receive a message that prompts
you to download a new client licensor certificate. You may receive this
message although your client licensor certificate is valid.CAUSEThis problem may occur if you change the name of the
RMS licensing cluster when you install the new version of RMS. For example, the following sequence of events describes how the problem occurs: - You
set up a pilot program with an RMS installation, and you name the
licensing server cluster as RMS_test_server.
- You upgrade the RMS
server and expand the scope of the RMS server to include your whole
organization.
- During the upgrade, you change the name of the server to
RMS_licensing_server.
As a result, the license acquisition URL that is identified in templates that
users may have created during the pilot program is no longer
valid.
RESOLUTION To resolve this problem, use the currently installed
version of RMS to create new templates and to publish new templates. To do
this, follow these steps:
- Remove the previously created templates from the client
computers and from any network share locations.
- Use the RMS Administration Web pages to create new
templates.
- Save the new templates to a location where the client
computers can access these templates.
- Use Systems Management Server (SMS) or Group Policy to
write the new templates to the client computers.
Alternatively, direct users to
download the new templates from the location where you saved them in step 3.
STATUS This
behavior is by design.
