"Your game port or game port drivers are not properly configured. Consult Device Manager" error message when you connect to Microsoft Sidewinder game controller (830523)

  • Microsoft SideWinder FreeStyle Pro
  • Microsoft SideWinder 3D Pro
  • Microsoft SideWinder game pad

SYMPTOMS

When you plug in any one of the game controllers listed in the "Applies To" section of this article, you may receive the following error message or an error message that is similar to the following:
Your game port or game port drivers are not properly configured. Consult Device Manager.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when you use a third-party gameport to USB adapter to connect a gameport controller to a USB port.

RESOLUTION

Connect the SideWinder gameport device to a compatible gameport. The Microsoft SideWinder Freestyle Pro and most models of the Microsoft SideWinder Precision Pro can be used with the Microsoft gameport to USB adapter.
