DVD closed captions do not work after you use Suspend mode or Hibernate mode (830234)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Media Player 9 Series for Windows XP
  • Microsoft Windows Media Player 10

SYMPTOMS

The closed captions on a DVD may be disabled after you resume the system from either Suspend mode or Hibernate mode. Specifically, if you play a DVD with the Closed Captions option enabled, and if you put Microsoft Windows in Suspend mode or in Hibernate mode, the Closed Caption option may be disabled after the system resumes.

Additionally, playback might also resume at the beginning of the current chapter that was playing. You expect the playback to resume where the DVD was playing before you put the system in Suspend mode or in Hibernate mode.

CAUSE

The Closed Caption setting is not preserved during Suspend mode or during Hibernate mode.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem after you resume playback: Click Captions and Subtitles on the Play menu, and then click Closed Captions.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

DVD playback in Microsoft Windows Media Player 9 Series for Microsoft Windows XP is dependent on MPEG-2 codecs that are provided by third-party providers. This same behavior might also appear in third-party DVD playback software.

Steps to Reproduce the Behavior

  1. Insert a DVD that includes closed captioning for the hard-of-hearing.
  2. On the Play menu, click Captions and Subtitles, and then click Closed Captions.

Note the captioning at the bottom of the video frame.
  3. Put the system either in Suspend mode or in Hibernate mode.
  4. Resume playback.

After the system resumes, the Closed Captions option is disabled, and the playback begins at the beginning of the chapter that was playing before you left.
