A Message About Display Resolution Appears When You Start the Media Center Program (830163)

SUMMARYThe first time that you start a Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition program on a Hewlett-Packard (HP) Pavilion ZD7000 laptop computer, you receive the following message at the bottom of the screen: Your display is running at a very high resolution which may cause performance problems in Media Center. Go to the Display Control Panel settings tab, and reduce the primary monitor's screen size. MORE INFORMATIONThis message occurs because the default screen resolution setting for the video adapter in the HP laptop is 1440 x 990 pixels. The highest screen resolution that Microsoft has tested for the Media Center program is 1024 x 768 pixels. Therefore, the message appears when the Media Center program starts on the HP laptop. However, HP has tested the 1440 x 990 pixel setting and has found no loss in performance. Therefore, HP does support this higher screen resolution setting. If you have reduced the screen resolution size (as suggested in the error message), you can safely increase the screen resolution to the larger setting of 1440 x 990 pixels. To reset the screen resolution in Control Panel, open Display, and then click the Settings tab and select the screen resolution setting that you want. This message is controlled by the following entry in the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center\Display Settings

After you increase the screen resolution and you restart the Media Center program, this registry entry is modified, and the message does not appear again. This message appears by design. Without this message, you might experience poor performance when the screen resolution is set very high and you might not know the reason. Your manufacturer may have customized the installation with unique components such as specific device drivers and optional settings to maximize the performance of that manufacturer's hardware.
