Windows Media Player 9 Series Performance Is Poor for Every Second Item in the Playlist (830114)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows Media Player 9 Series for Windows XP
- Microsoft Windows Media Player 9 Series for Windows Server 2003
- Microsoft Windows Media Player 9 Series for Windows Millennium Edition
- Microsoft Windows Media Player 9 Series for Windows 2000
SYMPTOMSWhen you play certain media types (for example, AVI, MPEG) in Microsoft Windows Media Player on a computer that supports multiple monitors, every second item that is in the playlist may play back with poor performance.CAUSE This problem occurs because not all the items in the playlist take advantage of the hardware buffer to render video. Specifically, only every second item in the playlist uses the hardware buffer to render video. When the player uses the operating system to render the video, more system resources are required. Therefore, performance during playback is affected.STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section of this article.MORE INFORMATIONThis problem does not occur with Windows Media video files because Windows Media Player uses different playback paths for Windows Media-based content than for other forms of content.
You can expect this problem to affect only playback performance and not to affect the ability to play a video.
