Movie Maker unexpectedly quits when you select a video transition effect (830087)

SYMPTOMS

When you select a video transition effect in Windows Movie Maker, Movie Maker may unexpectedly quit, and you may receive any one of the following error messages:
Moviemk has caused an error in KERNEL32.DLL. Moviemk will now close.
Moviemk has caused an error in DIVXAF.AX. Moviemk will now close.
Note You may not receive an error message when Movie Maker quits.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because Movie Maker conflicts with the divxaf.ax codec.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then click My Computer.
  2. Locate the C:\Windows\System32\Divxaf.ax file.
  3. Right-click Divxaf.ax, and then click Rename.
  4. Type divxaf.old, and then press ENTER.
  5. If prompted to confirm the name change, click Yes.
