"Allocation Unit Not Valid" Error Message When You Run the Chkdsk Utility Program (830080)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
SYMPTOMSAfter you install Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3) on a Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional computer that is using the FAT32 file system, you may receive the following error message if you run the Chkdsk utility program immediately after you restart the computer: \WINNT\system32\wbem\Repository\$WinMgmt.$FG first allocation unit is not valid.
The entry will be truncated.
File and folder verification is complete.
Windows found problems with the file system.
CAUSEThis behavior occurs because Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) 1.5 prevents some temporary files from being overwritten when the Winmgmt service is first started after Windows 2000 SP3 is installed. After WMI releases the temporary files, the Chkdsk utility program can be run successfully.WORKAROUNDTo work around this behavior, do not run the Chkdsk utility program immediately after you install Windows 2000 SP3.
