Disable Systems Management Server 2.0 Logon Points Before You Upgrade to Systems Management Server 2003 (830030)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003

SUMMARY

This article discusses issues with logon points in a Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2.0 hierarchy when you upgrade from SMS 2.0 to SMS 2003.

MORE INFORMATION

Before you upgrade your SMS 2.0 hierarchy to SMS 2003, you must disable all the logon points that are installed in the hierarchy. Additionally, make sure that your logon scripts no longer use SMSls.bat. Instead, use Capinst.exe with the optional command-line switches in your logon scripts. To disable the logon points in the SMS 2.0 hierarchy, follow these steps:

Note To follow these steps, you must have Modify permissions for the site security object class or instance.
  1. Disable Windows Networking Logon Client Installation because SMS 2003 does not support it. To do so, follow these steps:
    1. In the SMS 2.0 Administrator Console, expand Systems Management Server, expand Site Database, expand Site Hierarchy, expand site name, expand Site Settings, and then click Client Installation Methods.
    2. In the Details pane, right-click Windows Networking Logon, and then click Properties.
    3. In the Windows Networking Logon Client Installation Properties dialog box, click the General tab.
    4. Click to clear the Enable Windows Networking Logon Client Installation check box.
  2. Disable Windows Networking Logon Discovery because SMS 2003 does not support it. To do so, follow these steps:
    1. In the SMS 2.0 Administrator Console, expand Systems Management Server, expand Site Database, expand Site Hierarchy, expand site name, expand Site Settings, and then click Discovery Methods.
    2. In the Windows Networking Logon Discovery Properties dialog box, click the General tab.
    3. Click to clear the Enable Windows Networking Logon Discovery. check box.
You can use the SMS 2003 Deployment Readiness Wizard (DRW) to help you prepare your SMS 2.0 site hierarchy for an upgrade to SMS 2003. The DRW runs predesigned tests and notifies you of any warnings and errors that may cause the upgrade not to succeed.

The DRW also verifies whether there are SMS 2.0 logon points are currently installed in the hierarchy. The DRW test looks for SMS logon server roles on the SQL table sysResList. If it detects an SMS logon server role, the DRW stops the test. For the test to succeed, you must disable all the logon points.
