You cannot see a toolbar, a toolbar button, or the menu bar in the Visio 2003 program window (829914)

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Office Visio 2003, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms when you view the Visio program window:
  • A toolbar that you know is enabled is not visible.
  • One or more buttons appear to be missing from a toolbar.
  • The menu bar is missing.

CAUSE

These problems may occur if you accidentally drag a toolbar or a menu bar outside the visible area of the screen. Similar problems may also occur if either one of the following conditions is true:
  • The screen resolution of your monitor is set to a value that is too low to display all the buttons on a toolbar.
  • Two or more toolbars are docked next to each other on the same row, and there is not sufficient room to display all the buttons on a toolbar. In this situation, a Toolbar Options button is displayed at the end of the toolbar.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use any one of the following methods, as appropriate to your situation.

Method 1: Change the screen resolution of your monitor

Set the screen resolution of your monitor to a setting that is 800 x 600 pixels or higher. To change the screen resolution of your monitor, follow these steps.

Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
  1. Right-click an empty area of your desktop, and then click Properties.
  2. Click the Settings tab.
  3. Under Screen resolution, move the slider to the setting that you want, and then click OK.

Method 2: Reposition the toolbars

Reposition the toolbars in the Visio program window so that each toolbar is displayed on a separate row. To move a toolbar, drag the handle of the toolbar to the location that you want.

Method 3: Click the Toolbar Options button on the toolbar

In situations when two or more toolbars are docked next to each other on the same row, there may not be sufficient room to display all the buttons on the toolbar. To see the buttons that do not fit on the toolbar, click the Toolbar Options button at the end of the toolbar.

Method 4: Edit the registry to restore the toolbars and menu bars to their default locations

Restore the toolbars and the menu bars in the Visio program to window to use the default settings. To do so, follow these steps.

Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
  1. Quit Visio (if it is running).
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  4. Locate, and then click the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Visio\Toolbars

  5. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
  6. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
  7. Quit Registry Editor.
The next time that you start Visio, Visio recreates the registry subkey that you deleted earlier in step 4, and restores the toolbars and the menu bars to their default locations in the Visio program window.
