Error Message: This Object Was Created in MSDraw (829883)



The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office Word 2003
  • Microsoft Word 2002

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Word, when you try to edit an object that is contained in a Word document, you may receive the following error message:
This object was created in MSDraw.
This application is not available to open this object.
Make sure the application is properly installed and that it has not been deleted, moved, or renamed.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if Microsoft Draw 98 is not installed on your computer. Word cannot convert Microsoft Draw 98 objects.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, you must install Microsoft Office 97 and Draw 98 on your computer, edit the Draw 98 object, and then paste the object as an MS Office Drawing Object in Word. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Run a minimal setup of Office 97. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Run Setup.exe from your Office 97 installation disks.
    2. When the Office 97 Setup starts, click Continue.
    3. Type your name and organization information, and then click OK.
    4. Click OK to confirm your name and organization information.
    5. Click OK to the Product ID.
    6. Click OK to accept the default installation folder.
    7. Click Custom for the type of installation that you want.
    8. In the Microsoft Office 97 - Custom dialog box, click to clear all the check boxes except the check box for Microsoft Binder, and then click Continue.
    9. Click OK when the Office 97 Setup has completed successfully.
  2. Install Draw 98. To do this, follow these steps.

    Note If you try to install Draw 98 on a computer that does not have Office 97 installed, you receive the following message:Setup could not find at least one Microsoft Office 97 application installed on your system. Please install at least one Microsoft Office 97 application before installing this application.
    1. To obtain Draw 98, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
    2. Click Download.
    3. In the File Download dialog box, click Open.
    4. Click Yes when you receive the following message:This program will install Microsoft Draw 98. Do you want to continue?
    5. Click Yes to accept the license agreement.
    6. In the Microsoft Draw 98 Setup dialog box, click Continue.
    7. Click Continue to install the Draw 98 add-on for Office 97.
    8. Click OK when the Draw 98 Setup has completed successfully.
    9. Click OK when you receive the following message:To start using Draw 98: In Word choose Picture from the Insert menu, then New Drawing. In Outlook and in many other applications choose Object from the Insert menu, then "Microsoft Draw 98 Drawing" from the list box. Click the OK button. To uninstall Draw 98, rerun setup.
  3. Paste the Draw 98 object as an MS Office Drawing Object. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Start Word and open the document that contains the Draw 98 object.
    2. Right-click the Draw 98 object, point to Drawing Object, and then click Open.

      Note Microsoft Draw opens in a separate window.
    3. On the Edit menu, click Select All.
    4. On the Edit menu, click Copy.
    5. On the File menu, click Exit & Return to path\filename.doc
    6. If you are prompted to save the changes to the Draw 98 Drawing, click No.
    7. In your Word document, click Paste Special on the Edit menu.
    8. In the Paste Special dialog box, click MS Office Drawing Object, and then click OK.
