Active Directory Objects Have a Question Mark (?) After SMS Active Directory User Discovery or Active Directory System Discovery (829856)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003

SYMPTOMS

After Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 Active Directory User or Active Directory System discovery in a Single-Byte Character Set (SBCS)-based Active Directory environment occurs, Active Directory objects based on the Double-Byte Character Set (DBCS) may contain a question mark character ("?") for each character that did not translate.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the translation engine cannot translate correctly when it converts DBCS. As a result, the translation engine replaces the characters with a question mark (?).

For example, if you run SMS 2003 Active Directory User discovery or Active Directory System discovery in a US English character (SBCS)-based Active Directory environment, objects that use the Japanese characters (DBCS) are converted to a "?".

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section of this article.
