How Systems Management Server 2003 clients communicate with a management point through a router or through a proxy server (829854)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003

SUMMARY

This article discusses how Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 clients communicate with an SMS 2003 management point through a router or proxy server that blocks or intercepts all traffic on port 80.

MORE INFORMATION

By design, the Systems Management Server 2003 Advanced client executable (Ccmexec) uses Microsoft Windows HTTP Services (WinHttp) on port 80 to connect to an SMS 2003 Management point. Therefore, the SMS 2003 management point only listens on port 80 for communication with the SMS 2003 client. If a router or a proxy server separate your SMS 2003 clients from the management point, you may have to take the following actions, depending on your situation:
  • To communicate through a router, you must open port 80 for the SMS 2003 client to communicate with a management point.
  • To communicate through a proxy server that intercepts all network traffic on port 80, you may have to add the SMS 2003 management point server name to an access list. When you do so, the proxy server can forward the requests to the management point and not to the Internet.
