You Cannot Delete a Distribution Point If the SMSPKG<x>$ Folder Is Removed or Is Missing on the Server Share Distribution Point (829841)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003

SYMPTOMS

When you delete a Distribution Point where the SMSPKGx$ (where x is the drive letter) folder has been manually deleted, or is missing, the Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003 (SMS 2003) Distribution Manager cannot delete the distribution point and continues to try to delete it.

The SMS\Logs\Distmgr.log file contains an error status message that is similar to the following error status message: Error: 2 - The system cannot find the file specified.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because The SMSPKGx$ folder is manually deleted or is missing on the distribution point server, and then you disable that site server as a distribution point.

When the SMSPKGx$ folder is manually deleted or is missing, the SMS 2003 Distribution Manager continues to try to delete the distribution point. It generates an error status message each time it does so.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, you can re-create a folder that is named SMSPKGx$ on the distribution point server. For example, if your SMSPKG file is located on the root of the drive C, name the package SMSPKGc$.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section of this article.
